Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder,the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

Knowledge and virtue

Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command

over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University; I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passi治疗癫痫病医院效果怎么样on and the pride of man.

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew. One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him

to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit." "Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!" A lesson of life

everything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment." Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of

every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance,”she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?"Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. On my way home, as I have many times since, I thoug小儿癫痫有哪些症状ht of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment" I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

I love English

As everyone knows, English is very important today. It has been used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet. If we can speak English well, we will have more chance to succeed. Because more and more people have taken notice of it, the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed. But for myself, I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it. When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels, I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words. When I write

English, I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese... I love English, it gives me a colorful dream. I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries. I can see many places of great intrests. I

dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English. I also want to use my good English to introduce our great places to the English spoken people, I hope that they can love our country like us. I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well. If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English

everyday, it will love me too. I am sure that I will realize my dream one day! Thank you!

The Dog and his Bone

One fine day, a greedy dog took a walk. He saw something in the grass.

“Oh, it’s a bone! I love bones! “Oh,

What a lucky day! Lucky day! Lucky day!” “Hmm. How will I cook my new bone? “Hmm。

Will I smoke it? No!

Will I boil it? No!”

“Hmm. Will I fry it? Not likely! “Hmm。

I will eat it as it is.

That is the best way to eat a delicious bone.

Lulu, lala! Lulu, lala!” Lu-lu, la-la! Lu-lu, la-la!”

“Oh, what if another dog sees me? “Oh,

No , I will not, I will not share my bone.

It is all mine!

Hmm, where can I hide my bone?” Hmm,

He looked around and quickly left the park.

He ran and ran.

Finally, he ran onto a bridge.

“Whew! Now my bone is safe.” “Whew!

The greedy dog was very tired.

So he rested on the bridge.

He was overlooking a stream.

“Hey! Who is that? That dog has a bone too.”

“嘿! 那是谁?那条狗也有一根骨头”。 “Hmm, his bone is bigger than mine. “Hmm,

And his bone still has meat on it!”

The greedy dog wanted the other dog’s bone too.

“Bark! Bark! Give me that bone!”

"吠声! 吠声! 给我那根骨头!"

“Oh, my bone! It is gone! Bark! Bark!” "Oh,

But it was too late.

the rose in the wind james stephens

dip and swing, lift and sway; dream a life, in a dream,away.

like a dream in a sleep is the rose in the wind;

and a fish in the deep; and a man in the mind;

dreaming to lack all that is his; dreaming to gain all that he is.

dreaming a life, in a dream,away dip and swing, lift and sway.

joyce kilmer

i think that i shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.

a tree whose hungry mouth is prest agai the earth's sweet flowing breast;

a tree that looks at god all day, and lifts her leafy arms to pry;

a tree that may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair;

upon whose bosom snow has lain; who intimately lives with rain.

poems are made by fools like me, but only god can make a tree. Rain

Rain is falling all around, It falls on field and tree, It rains on the umbrella here, And on the ships at sea.

Never give up

Never give up, Never lose hope. Always have faith, It allows you to cope. Trying times will pass, As they always do. Just have patience, Your dreams will come true. So put on a smile, You'll live through your pain. Know it will pass, And strength you will gain.
